I believe that you’ll get pleasure from anything that Jane Austen has written. Go with Persuasion . . .

“Tuesdays With Morrie” is a memoir. Mitch Albom writes about his visits with Morrie, his former professor who is terminally ill.

You can go to http://www.amazon.com and get summaries of all the others.

You don’t say your age, gender or why you are reading (enjoyment, class requirement, etc.) So I would recommend that you review the summaries and pick the one that sounds most appealing.

I will tell you that “Remains of the Day,” “Room With A View,” and “The English Patient,” while being remarkable, beautiful books, are more challenging than the other you list.

    Classics:

“Persuasion” by Jane Austen: Austen’s second-most intriguing book, and I generally dislike her. Money and social mobility for an unmarried twentysomething in England. (B+.)

“A Room with a View” by E. M. Forster: Women’s rights in Edwardian England, inherently interesting due to that. Much more readable women’s lit classic than Austen, in my opinion. (A-)

“A Farewell to Arms” by Ernest Hemingway: Definitely read this. World War I is hell (especially if you’re an ambulance driver), part one. (A)

“All Quiet on the Western Front” by Erich Maria Remarque: Definitely read this. World War I is hell (especially if you’re a German grunt), part two. (A)

    Modern-Day:

“Tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Albom: Skip this. Should not be on the list with the others, in my opinion. (D)

“Remains of the Day” by Kazuo Ishiguro: Definitely read this. A butler and housekeeper have a love affair through the years. (A-)

“The English Patient” by Michael Ondaatje: Read this when you get the chance. A man lying wounded and others reminisce in the last days of World War II. (B)
