Question by Aвιgαιl ღ: Urgent! Should I write about my vegetarian beliefs for english class?
For my honors english class, we do a Portfolio assignment. Well I completely forgot that the plan of what we’re going to do is due tomorrow.
So I’m looking through my list of ideas she gave us, and one choice is writing a persuasive essay (it can be about anything that interests you). I thought this would be a good time to write about why I believe humans are naturally herbivores, since I have SO many good arguments about it, and I enjoy writing about those types of things.
But the thing is, I’m scared that either my teacher will be too bias and fail me because she thinks it’s nonsense (since most people don’t think that humans are herbivores), or that we’ll have to present the paper. I’m not sure if we have to present or not. This is what the list of ideas says.
“Write a persuasive speech in which you persuade your audience (who ever you determine that to be) to take action against something. It could be something apoliticallyly minded as the war in Iraq or something as silly as doing your homework. Your should work in the elements of persuasion as well arhetoricalal questions, parallelism, and detailed examples. In addition, you will write a reflection paper in which you discuss what elements of persuasion are present in your speech”.
Does it sound like we would have to present because it says “who ever you determine that to be”? I just wouldn’t feel comfortable presenting it infront of the class. HELP!?

irrelevant to your subject so no need. teach them about subject-verb agreement instead.

That would be good to write on since it’s something you believe in but remember the most important thing is to follow the instructor’s format and rules for the paper. Give reasons that support your beliefs with detailed examples but rememeber not to be offensive to the audience (people who are not vegetarians). Be strong in your argument but respectful at the same time.
Good luck!
Whatever you chose to write about may be something your teacher disagrees with. It is highly unlikely she would agree with an argument against doing homework for example.
It seems to me much better to write about a topic you have researched and are passionate about. This passion will come out in your writing and make it superior to others.
You may even convert your teacher to your vegetarian beliefs.
you couldnt persuade me to be a vegatarian.. meat is good for you, and there is nothing like a nice juicy steak. if you go forever being a veg. you dont know what your missing out on.
I wouldn’t. You’re better off writing about a topic you are less personally involved with, so you can concentrate on the assignment – which is _not_ “show how passionate you are about something”, it is “demonstrate that you can use a wide range of persuasion techniques in written English”.
If you wrote about how humans are naturally herbivores I’m afraid I would fail you. It’s simply nonsense and demonstrates a lack of research and understanding. Basic biology tells us that humans are naturally omnivores – we don’t have the right sort of teeth or digestive systems to be natural herbivores. Writing about how humans _should choose to be_ herbivores is entirely different and would be a valid choice – though, like I said, maybe one you are too close to to write about well.
You also need to work in that whole “take action” thing. You can’t take action to “naturally” be anything. If it’s “natural”, either you are or you aren’t.
Humans are naturally herbivores? That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. If you tried to present an argument like that to me, then I would laugh in your face and dub you ‘idiot’. Choose a different topic. Preferably one that makes you sound semi-intelligent.
Thank you for your article. Really Cool.
