Comprehensive, helpful, fascinating, March 26, 2011

Professors Sayler and Shadel, who have a wealth of collective experience on public speaking, offer what is, in my view, the most comprehensive guide to improvement in oral communication. Anything and everything useful to becoming a better speaker is included in this book, from the teachings of the classical rhetoricians, to drama-based lessons in voice and breath, to an enumeration of the particular pitfalls for male and female speakers. I myself have seen that this book, along with steady practice, has improved my oral advocacy considerably. Additionally fascinating are the sections on political rhetoric. If you are at all a political junkie, the chapter on the rhetoric of presidential campaigns adds unique insights to the topic; so too does the chapter on unethical speech. Finally, the chapter featuring 12 of the greatest speeches ever given is simply must-read. In short, I would recommend this book to anyone. It delivers on both practical and theoretical levels and is an immensely helpful resource for all who aspire to speak better.

Great Comprehensive “How to”, May 9, 2011

Tongue-tied America is a very comprehensive “how to” for oral advocacy. I am recommending this book mostly because of the authors’ organization and tips for becoming a better speaker. If you purchase this book (which you should!), take your time reading and absorbing the material. Really analyze how and why each section pertains to your public speaking abilities. It took me approximately 2 weekends to complete this read with a full schedule of class and work, but it was worth it! Also, Chapter 16 is an interesting chapter as it contains famous speeches from politically/socially recognizable figures like Corretta Scott King, Winston Churchill, and Maya Angelou. These speeches are an inspiring read, in addition to the tips to communicate in a more persuasive fashion- a key asset for a lawyer! Highly recommended!

A must read for law students in clinics or externships, May 3, 2011

The best part of doing an externship or clinical experience in law school is that you get to see and experience good and bad lawyering skills at your placement. This book is great because it is a baseline from which you can compare good lawyers from great lawyers. This is done because the book explains, in great detail, but not too complicated, those key communications skills that will make you shine. While this book is mainly set for law students to learn about public speaking, this book is much more. It provides great tips and useful info to communicate better on and off the page.
