Charm, Inspire, and Deliver a Winning Message like President Reagan, December 23, 2010

I have always admired and respected President Ronald Reagan, and spending thirty minutes with him in his California office in 1993 was an incredible experience because it reinforced first hand what we all know about him, he was the Great Communicator. Since I also speak and teach, I was excited when a friend told me about “The Reagan Persuasion: Charm, Inspire, And Deliver A Winning Message” by James C. Humes. I immediately went to the local bookstore and got a copy for myself. Humes, who drafted speeches for five American presidents, including President Reagan, as well as many others and for himself, wrote a simple book that captures the speaking keys that people can learn to better their own presentations. There will never be anyone who speaks like Reagan, but by learning from what he did, we can all better our messages, regardless of the situation we are delivering them. The book is simple to read and contains practical advice on speaking. Like President Reagan, Humes provided the information in a manner that would connect with the reader, not like a speech class textbook. And just as President Reagan made his points through the use of stories, Humes includes numerous stories about President Reagan, himself, and others that illustrate the speaking techniques he shares. The book has fifteen chapters after the short introduction, “The Fifteen Secrets of the Great Communicator.” I really liked that the first chapter focused on preparation being paramount to a great presentation. According to Humes, no president ever delivered an address or talk better prepared, and that is an important lesson for anyone who will be speaking. The next fourteen “Secrets” are just as relevant and putting them into practice will increase the effectiveness of any presentation. Some of these include: using parables, using take-away zingers, podium presence, your voice, how to read a speech as Reagan did, eating and drinking before speaking, casing the speaking area, answering Q & A, and more. The last page contains “Ten Tips To Speak Like Reagan.” All of the chapters contain numerous stories that make reading the book more enjoyable and the lessons more memorable. Not all of the stories are about Reagan, the book also includes stories about FDR, Lincoln, Churchill, Eisenhower, and others. Because of how much I admire and respect President Reagan, and the fact that I do a lot of speaking myself, I really enjoyed this book and plan to incorporate the strategies even more whenever I talk to increase the effectiveness of my messages. But even if you don’t admire and respect the former President as much as I do, you probably realize that he was not called the Great Communicator for nothing, and that you can learn much from how he approached the podium. This book can show you how. The book is easy to read and enjoyable with all of the stories, but at the same time conveys some very practical advice on speaking. If you want to learn how to charm, inspire, and deliver a winning message like President Reagan, read this book and put the “Secrets” into action. What a terrific book of tips and techniques for speaking publically. Even better, it’s full of quotes from the world’s leaders over the centuries. Mr Humes even explains the cause of some more recent speech failures of conservative politicians. He really makes this an enjoyable book, one I hope to refer back to for years to come.
