A much needed addition to trial literature, this book should be in every lawyer’s library. The reason is that this book tackles the many difficult problems that arise on cross—but unlike other books—this one clearly explains how to overcome them. For example, if you have ever been afraid of what to do when the witness continuously lies by answering “I don’t know” or “I don’t remember” to simple questions, this book will succinctly explain the problem and give you the steps to solve it. Also, unlike other books, the authors rightly believe that the success of a good cross is the result of not only good technique but also having a comprehensive trial strategy that links the themes in your opening and closing arguments with your themes on cross. It is one thing to prove that a witness is mistaken or has a bad memory, but is quite another thing—and much better—to show the jury why it matters. The book begins by explaining how to build a case theory from the facts you have. Then, you are taught how to use the theory and facts you have to prepare a cross. Throughout the book there are handy checklists to help you remember what you need to do. For example, there is checklist that shows you how to find your case theory, analyze your opponent’s case and then create a cross of a key witness based on what you have decided. By the end of the book, you have learned how to cross expert witnesses, argumentative witnesses, biased witnesses, and any other type you are likely to come across at trial. This book delivers all the skills and strategy you need in a very entertaining and authoratative manner.

    Highly Recommended, February 9, 2011

The Cross-Examination Handbook is an enormously practical, readable and above all useful guide to cross-examination. With handy checklists, real life tanscripts of memorable cross-examinations and much more, the authors have created the kind of tool that experienced trial lawyers will want to review before big trials and students will remember long after their studies are completed. As a former federal prosecutor and now law professor, I highly recommend it. - Prof. John McKay Seattle University School of Law
