Can anyone suggest some novels that have a similar style or story line as Jane Austen’s “Persuasion”?

Question by Evil Tuffy: Can anyone recommend some novels that have a equivalent style or story line as Jane Austen’s “Persuasion”?
I like books that exhibits realism, genuine insight of the human character, romance (but not sexually explicit), and it has a satisfying ending. Please and thank you :)

In romance, novels written in that style are known as Regency. A private favorite of mine is Barbara Metzger. She has a rather large booklist. You may also want to examine Jo Beverley. I not long ago study “Deidre and Don Juan” by Beverley and it was very good. Regency romance is typically on the “sweet” (sex behind closed doors) side of the scale.

The best book I can recommend you is Gaudy Night, by Dorothy L Sayers. It’s one of my favorites. Obstensibly, it’s a mystery novel, but the focus is NOT on the mystery in the least – in fact, I can hardly remember what the mystery is. It’s one of her Lord Peter novels, but the main character is Harriet Vane, the woman whom he has loved unrequitedly for the past ten years or so. It’s extremely psychologically based -you really get inside her characters heads, and it’s the most realistic romance I’ve ever read. It has some very romantic scenes, but it’s not sexually explicit at all. In one of her most romantic scenes, the two main characters don’t even touch. The tone is a lot like Persuasion too. And the ending is definitely satisfying. An all around wonderful book.

I used to love the Georgette Heyer historical romances. Not sure if they’re in print, or if they can only be found in a second hand bookstore, but they’re perfect if you like Austen. They’re better then Austin, in some ways – e.g. don’t get bogged down in a lot of unnecessary description.
